The suburb of Rockingham is located within the south- west coastal strip of Perth’s metropolitan region. Close to the maritime and resource related employment hubs of Kwinana and Henderson, it is a 20 minute drive from Fremantle and just 30 minutes from the Perth CBD (about 40km south).

North Facing Beaches – the beaches around Rockingham are very popular with residents and visitors from far and wide. Rockingham features the only north- facing beach in the Perth Metro Area. This means the beach is protected from the harsh afternoon winds. 

Strong Local Investment – the value of building approvals in the City of Rockingham as $755 million in the 2013-2014 financial year. This represents a 73% increase in non-residential building applications.

Diverse Local Industry – the city’s industries contributed nearly $4 billion per annum in Gross Regional Product over the past 12 months, with 73% of staff living and working locally. Industries include retail, defence, marine, tourism, resources, construction and energy. 

Low Vacancy – affordability creates strong rental demand. Rockingham supports one of the lowest vacancy levels in the State. According to RPS April 2014 investor report “the vacancy rate sits almost one percent below the Perth average. this indicates future strength in the investor market”. 

One Stop Education –  with numerous schools, Murdoch University and the newly constructed Challenger Institute of Technology ; Rockingham offers all levels of education in the one location.

The recently refurbished Rockingham General Hospital now offers 232- beds and provides general medical, general surgical and emergency services. 

Rockingham is also well services with public transport. Rockingham train station is located off Ennis Avenue, with a regular shuttle bus ferrying passengers through the City Centre and waterfront areas. Over 100,000 people utilise this service every month. 

The estimated Resident Population of the City of Rockingham, was 120,859 as of 30 June 2013. There was an increase in population of 5% p.a. over the last two years. Projections from the the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) forecast Rockingham’s population to increase to 171,300 or a further 57.1%, over the 15 years to 2026

Recently Completed Major Projects

Rockingham Foreshore Revitalisation

The Rockingham Foreshore Revitalisation was completed in August 2019. Stage one comprises three main areas: 

  • Railway Terrace, a pedestrian friendly shopping and eat street
  • Beach Plaza, a new civic heart for Rockingham with a range of recreational, cultural and heritage attractions; and
  • The Boardwalk, featuring timber terraces and some ‘young- at-heart’ attractions connecting to the beach.

All three main areas have welcomed improved facilities for cyclists, along with both CCTV and lighting upgrades. In addition, a new accessible ‘Lookout’ and ‘Beach Bowl’ have been created, giving all visitors the chance to take greater advantage of the foreshore’s north-facing beach and expansive parklands which can be transformed into a space for concerts and events. 

The project has won several awards including:

New Gate Way To Rockingham- Kulija Road

  • Officially opened in August 2014 at a total construction cost of $17.8 million, this 4.5 km non-stop route from the Kwinana Freeway directly into Rockingham reduces travel tie from Perth by approximately 10 minutes. 
  • Commercial properties on or near Dixon Road will benefit from a significant increase in traffic using this principal access route from the Freeway. 

Rockingham City Shopping Centre

Recent $160 million dollar expansion with further expansion plans underway. The expansion received the Property Council of Australia WA award for Retail property of the year.

Challenger Institute of Technology 

  • Officially opened in June 2014, the $28 million state-of-the-art Building Technologies Training Facility in Rockingham represents a major step forward for the Western Australian construction industry. 
  • The new building and construction training facility is the largest in Western Australia. 
  • Offers pre- apprenticeship and apprenticeship training for up to 900 students
